David F. Lau, JD, CLU, ChFCDirector
Mr. Lau brings over 40 years of experience in the areas of wealth and estate planning, risk management, retirement planning and asset protection. Under his leadership, the firm has grown from what was principally an insurance and benefits firm into a diversified financial services boutique with specific expertise in private wealth management and corporate benefit solutions.
David graduated with honors from DePauw University (Greencastle, IN) with a Bachelor of Arts, after which he entered the financial services profession, joining his father’s Lau & Associates in 1973. In 1975, Messrs. Lau changed the name of the firm to Lau & Lau Associates in recognition of their new partnership. During this time, Dave attended the Detroit College of Law at night, graduating with a Juris Doctor in 1978.
Dave received the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation in 1983, Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) in 1984, and Life Insurance Counselor (LIC) in 1987.
Mr. Lau is a member and has been a board member of numerous industry organizations, including the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA), the Society of Financial Service Professionals, the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU) and the Financial and Estate Planning Council of Metro Detroit, Inc. David is a Life and Qualifying Member of the Million Dollar Round Table and a frequent speaker to industry and community groups.

Joyce K. LeinengerDirector, Corporate Benefits Solutions*
Joyce graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts from Western Michigan University and has completed post-graduate work at both Central Michigan University and Oakland University. Joyce entered the financial services industry in 1984 and joined Lau & Lau Associates in 1990. She has great expertise in the design, implementation and management of employee benefit, qualified retirement and executive benefit plans. Integral in the development and growth of the firm’s Corporate Benefit Solutions practice, Joyce and her team work in a very collaborative, consultative nature with the firm’s corporate clients – resulting in a number of dedicated, long-term client relationships.
Robert J. Grabiel, CFA, AIF®
Robert graduated from DePauw University’s Management Fellows Program in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business in 2011. He is also a CFA charterholder.
Robert spent the early part of his career as an analyst for institutional asset managers, including the Treasurers of Ford Motor Company and Owens Corning along with a number of hedge fund clients at Bank of America.
Originally coming to Lau & Lau Associates as a client, Robert understands the tremendous value of highly personalized client service in the financial planning process and now plays an instrumental role in advising the firm’s personal and corporate clients alike.
Rob is a member of the CFA Society of Detroit.
Cindi joined Lau & Lau Associates in 2005 as an employee benefit analyst following a career in the insurance industry. She is currently the Senior Employee Benefit Analyst for the Corporate Benefit Solutions Team. Her interests include reading, gardening, and spending time with her family.
Pam’s career in the insurance industry began in 1988; joining Lau & Lau Associates in 1998. As the Senior Benefits Client Service Specialist, Pam is instrumental in assisting employers and their employees in enrollment, claim and billing processes. Additionally, she provides front-line employer and employee service, works diligently in claim resolution, assists in status change processing and prepares participant communication materials.
Pam is an active member of her church and earned an Associate’s Certificate in Biblical Studies and Leadership Development in 2017. Pam also enjoys traveling and spending quality time with her family.
Jessica Stanley, QKA*
Jessica joined Lau & Lau Associates in 2015 as a Corporate Benefits Relationship Manager. She has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Master of Training and Development, both from Oakland University. Jessica has a strong background in human resources with over 10 years of experience in benefits administration. She also holds the Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA) credential. Jessica supports client relationships in both the qualified plan and health and welfare areas of our practice, ensuring that client benefit programs are managed to their specific needs. Her strong organizational and communication skills are a benefit to plan sponsors in the development of employee education and communication.
Chris joined the Corporate Benefit Solutions Team in 2015 as a Benefit Analyst. As an employee, he has benefited from the supportive and client-based atmosphere at Lau & Lau Associates, and has been able to grow his knowledge of corporate benefit solutions. Chris has also had the opportunity to become an integral part of the team, assisting in various areas, including client relationship management, set-up and implementation of employee benefits, and internal procedures development.
Chris graduated from Concordia University Ann Arbor in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. He has spent time both as a classroom and private teacher. He continues to sing professionally throughout the year and to grow his musical skills as a performer and teacher.
Melinda joined Lau & Lau Associates in 2017 as an Employee Benefits Relationship Manager. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Central Michigan University. Melinda worked in the business services industry for over 11 years and has experience assisting clients with financial staffing, HR information management, compliance and business process efficiency. Melinda participates as a member of the group benefits department in implementing and managing employee benefit plans. She is responsible for assisting employers and their employees during open enrollment, managing ad-hoc requests, including problem-solving on administrative issues, and ensuring compliance with professional standards.
Spencer graduated with honors from Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business with a Bachelor of Arts in Finance. After graduating in 2016, Spencer worked for JPMorgan Chase in their Commercial Banking Analyst program.
Spencer joined Lau & Lau Associates in 2018, dividing his time between both the Private Wealth Services and Corporate Benefits Solutions teams. He holds the FINRA Series 7 and 66 securities registration as well as the State of Michigan DIFS Life, Accident, and Health Insurance licenses.
Donald F. Lau, CLU (1911-1980)
Following his graduation from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Mr. Lau founded Lau & Associates in Detroit in 1940. He served in the Army during World War II and was discharged at the end of the War in the grade of 1st Lieutenant. Following the War, Mr. Lau served as an adjunct professor of insurance at Wayne University (now Wayne State University), received the CLU designation from The American College of Life Underwriters in 1949, and in 1955 graduated from the CLU Institute at the University of Wisconsin. A Life and Qualifying Member of the Million Dollar Round Table, he was named ‘Man of the Year’ by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. (“MassMutual”) in 1953 and again in 1957.
Mr. Lau served as a Board Member of the Detroit Life Underwriters Association, the YMCA, and Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Detroit Athletic Club, Otsego Ski Club, the Lost Lake Woods Club and Crystal Downs Country Club. He was an Eagle Scout and a lifelong friend of the Boy Scouts of America.
Mr. Lau’s professionalism, integrity and commitment to community were the hallmarks of his professional life and set the standard for the firm’s corporate ethos.

Dave joined Lau & Lau Associates in 2001 following a 20-year career as regional director with Assurant Employee Benefits, a national employee benefit insurance firm. Prior to his time at Assurant, Dave served as a Trust Officer at Michigan National Bank, and earlier as the Employee Benefits Manager at commercial insurance brokerage firm, Bayly Martin & Fay.
Dave has been a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) since 1976 and is a charter member of the National Association of Health Underwriters.
In addition to his work in Employee Benefits Solutions, Dave serves as a specialist in the area of individual medical coverage and is fully licensed and appointed in senior health care options, including Medicare supplements, Medicare Advantage and long-term care insurance.
Jason M. Tether, CLTC, CRPC
Following his graduation from Westfield State College (B.S., Marketing and Management) in 1992, Jason joined MassMutual Financial Group’s Pension Management Division where he worked with consultants and advisors in the sale and service of institutional retirement plans.
Jason has over 20 years of experience in working with both institutional and private clients; his expertise is in executive employee retirement programs, employee benefit plans, personal financial services, risk management and voluntary employee benefits.
He is a member of the Crittenton Hospital Medical Center Foundation (Planned Giving Committee) and the Rochester Regional Chamber of Commerce.
